Exploring Teesside University’s Immersive Room

Exploring Teesside University’s Immersive Room

Over the past few weeks, the team has been spending time in the space exploring its capabilities, testing different types of content, and understanding how immersive technologies might support future creative projects. Rather than approaching the room with a fixed outcome in mind, we’ve been using it as a space for discovery, inviting colleagues to experience the environment and share their thoughts on what it could become.

One of the most valuable aspects of these sessions has been seeing how people respond when surrounded by content rather than viewing it on a traditional screen. Whether showcasing video, animation, photography, or digital environments, the room changes the relationship between audience and content. Ideas that feel familiar in a conventional format can take on an entirely new dimension when experienced at scale.

As more team members have stepped into the space, conversations have naturally shifted from what the technology does to what it enables. Discussions have ranged from immersive storytelling and virtual production techniques to new ways of presenting research, engaging audiences, and creating interactive experiences.

The potential for collaboration is particularly exciting. The Immersive Room could provide opportunities to work alongside researchers visualising complex data, educators developing engaging learning experiences, or creative teams exploring new approaches to narrative and audience participation. It also opens the door to partnerships with organisations looking to communicate ideas in more impactful and memorable ways.

For TUCAN Studio, these early experiments are helping us understand where immersive experiences could sit alongside our existing production work. Rather than replacing traditional filmmaking, animation, or design, the technology offers another creative tool, one that encourages audiences to step inside a story rather than simply observe it.

We’re still in the exploration phase, but that’s where some of the most interesting discoveries happen. Every session generates new ideas, new questions, and new possibilities. As we continue experimenting, we’re looking forward to seeing where those conversations lead and what opportunities emerge from this unique creative space.
